I've been waiting for a tool like Microsoft Visio's diagramming (ERD) that would also create/use the related SQL instructions. One would think that Microsoft would have added something like this in their 2003 version of the software - now one can only hope it's in the 2007 version.

I've been using SQLyog as my SQL management solution tool of choice, and it's definately a great product, one which I really need to pay for the retail version and register (just because it's indisposable, even compared to the MySQL AB Team's tools, in my opinion). Unfortunately for SQLyog, one of their features on the roadmap was to create a diagramming tool, which was a big reason for me sticking with it and continually download the updates and get used to the software. They have yet to incorporate this, but I've found something that does.
Well, I've just now, thanks to a link posted from Sitepoint's latest blog about using SVN with web-based projects, found DBDesigner 4. The issues about database backups came up with a versioning control system, and not only was a versioning system linked to about databases, but so was this amazing new (new to me) tool, thanks BerislavLopac! It even comes with a web-front-end for creating simple database management type sites (i.e.: shopping cart/receipt management? ...not too sure from the pictures), though I couldn't find a download link - the information's on their main domain page. Oh, did I mention they also have an importer plugin for importing different types of data streams? I didn't?! Well now I did!

Now, I will be honest - I have yet to try it out, but it just looks so amazingly awesome. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so as according to BerislavLopac, MySQL AB has acquired the software.

While we're on the topic of free software, I've just downloaded Blender (a free, open source 3D graphics tool/engine) and Inkscape (a free open source vector-based art program). Inkscape, if it works, will definately be useful. If I can ever figure out how to use a 3D art program, I'm sure I'll put Blender to some good use...and although somewhat unrelated, and I don't need it because I have retail software I'm happy with -- there's an open source CD/DVD burning program here. It's quite well-done actually. If I didn't have Nero, I'd definately be using this (I hate Roxio).

Also, thanks for the article itself, Maarten Manders. The ability to use SVN with a web-based application will definately be beneficial once I start building a rather large app.
